Ultimate is a fast-moving sport played with a frisbee disc. The action of the game combines the passing and scoring of football, the cutting and guarding of basketball, and the non-stop field movement of soccer.
Because ultimate is a team sport, each player is afforded the possibility of acting as quarterback, receiver, and defender all in the same point. Two teams of seven players each play the game within an area that closely resembles a football field. The object of the game is to pass the disc between teammates down the field, without running with the disc, until one team catches a pass in the opponent's endzone.
A thrower must establish a pivot foot like in basketball with a defender trying to limit the area he or she is trying to throw into, while the receiver cuts into open space in hopes of being thrown the disc. The defenders are not allowed to overtly contact the offenders, but run closely with the intent of intercepting the pass or causing the pass to not be completed. Turnovers are immediate with the defenders and offenders reversing their roles.
Athleticism is paramount, for each point is filled
with constant running, sprinting, jumping, diving for the disc.
